Head of Greek Orthodox Church dies

THE HEAD of Greece’s powerful Orthodox Church, Archbishop Christodoulos, who mended ties with the Vatican but clashed with the Greek state, died of cancer yesterday at the age of 69.

A staunch defender of the role of the Church in Greece, he died at his home in Athens, only months after plans for a liver transplant in the United States were cancelled.

Initially the School will enroll 30 students from Cyprus and Greece.

Only three days to run for the Cyprus pound

WITH only three days to go until its final demise, around £200 million worth of Cyprus pounds are still in circulation, the Central Bank said yesterday.

According to Kyriacos Zingas, a senior official at the Central Bank, £500 million worth have been taken out of circulation since the adoption of the euro, but not all have been returned.

Sick Tassos told to stay home

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos has not been well over the past few days, according to the government spokesman, Vasilis Palmas.

“The President has caught a virus and doctors have advised him to stay at home for two to three days.

“I hope we can convince him to stay home tomorrow too, but I think this is unlikely,” Palmas said yesterday.
