Smarting Porto looking to avoid another APOEL sting

Porto are not afraid to make wholesale changes to their team as they seek to improve on their recent Champions League form and avoid being stunned again by Group G’s surprise leaders APOEL Nicosia in Tuesday’s Champions League match in Cyprus.

The Cypriots, who drew 1-1 at twice European champions Porto last time and are the biggest overachievers of this season’s competition so far, will also be looking for a better performance than Friday’s display against Anorthosis when they were forced to settle for a goalless home draw the league.

UN says Cyprus talks positive and productive

A U.N. envoy for Cyprus said talks held in New York on Sunday to overcome a logjam in peace negotiations were “positive” but said it was up to the rival sides to find common ground in the decades-old conflict.

“The U.N. is pleased with the way it’s going,” said Alexander Downer, a former Australian foreign minister who has been overseeing on-island peace talks for three years.

The United Nations is trying to revive flagging peace talks with two-day meeting at a secluded farm in Manhasset outside New York to resolve a dispute harming Turkey’s EU entry bid and energy projects in the eastern Mediterranean.

Jewish Detention Camps in Cyprus

Tonight Professor Emanuel Gutmann, who worked in the British detention camps during the late 1940s will deliver a lecture about this extraordinary period in Cyprus history.

To give you a sense of how these dreadful camps operated, I have taken an article from the Cyprus Mail archives which I wrote back in April of this year.

The story features two remarkable men, one in Larnaca, the other in Famagusta. Both men, who are now in their eighties, worked at the camps.

Between 1946 and 1949, twelve “Jewish internment camps” on the east coast held the equivalent of almost ten per cent of the population of Cyprus at that time.

Shift in thinking needed to reap full gas wealth

CYPRUS must find ways of doing business with Turkey if it is to capitalise fully on the potentially huge gas bonanza in its offshore waters, energy experts say.

The most cost-effective way to export any finds to European markets and beyond is by pipeline to Turkey where it could mesh with major pipeline projects.

The other main option is to build a liquefaction plant in Cyprus to export the gas by tanker. That could cost $8 billion and take years to complete. A pipeline to Greece, meanwhile, would be prohibitively expensive.

Dealing commercially with Turkey in the absence of a Cyprus solution would require a seismic shift in political thinking. But given the financial, political and security rewards, there are some signs that is already happening.

New York talks: avoiding Ban blame is the paltry prize

THE CYPRUS peace talks have always followed the same script. They drag on uneventfully for a few years and eventually reach a climax, the supposed make-or-break point, after which they break and are followed by a few years of no activity until they resume again. This script has been repeated over the last 37 years, much longer if we add the lower-key, inter-communal talks held before the Turkish invasion.
