Friends reunited: DIKO votes to back Christofias

THE CENTRE-right DIKO party of ousted President Tassos Papadopoulos last night voted to rekindle its unholy alliance with AKEL and EDEK, by throwing its vote behind candidate Demetris Christofias for Sunday’s election runoff.

The decision was taken by a secret ballot of members some six hours after the central committee began its meeting at around 7pm.

Tassos stands back from round two

OUTGOING President Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday he would not attempt to influence voters in the election runoff on Sunday.

Papadopoulos was ousted from the runoff last Sunday when he came third, losing out to AKEL’s Demetris Christofias and DISY’s Ioannis Kasoulides.

Seven years for woman caught carrying cocaine

A 30-YEAR-old woman from Poland has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment after Limassol Criminal Court found her guilty of importing massive quantities of cocaine to Cyprus.

Monica Newman was arrested by police in early January when she arrived from Amsterdam via Brussels, carrying over 1.2kg of cocaine in her stomach.

Two companies chosen for airport ground handling

THE CYPRUS Airways (CY) joint venture with Swissport – GAP Vassilopoulos (Cyprus) Ltd has been chosen as one of the two companies that will take over ground handling at the island’s airports.

The second joint venture was named yesterday as Goldair Handling S.A., Servisair UK Ltd and CLIN Company Ltd, the latter of which is a subsidiary of Louis.

Tornado wrecks three cars

A TORNADO caused extensive damages to three cars that parked at the District Offices of DISY in Golgon Street in Larnaca yesterday.

UN denies plans to move out had Tassos won

UNFICYP yesterday denied that the UN had been making tentative plans to extricate itself from Cyprus if President Tassos Papadopoulos had been re-elected.

A brief statement from UNFICYP said reports that such a move had been in the pipeline were “totally baseless and irresponsible”.

Crackdown on illegal immigrants

FOURTEEN people were arrested yesterday as part of the police’s continuing crackdown against foreigners who illegally reside or work on the island, or have otherwise entered Cyprus without permission.

In the island-wide operation, ten people were arrested for working illegally and four for illegal entry.

The monastery of Georgian kings in Paphos

EXCAVATIONS at the 12th century Georgian monastery near Gialia village in the Paphos District have uncovered the ruined building’s main church and two smaller chapels on the north side of the structure.

Also uncovered as part of the two-year old excavations, some five kilometres from Polis, were storerooms on the south side and cisterns connected to the water channel.

Cyprus caught in the big freeze

CYPRUS was yesterday in the grip of a cold spell, with low temperatures, freezing cold, sleet and even snow on the plain over the past couple of days.

Sleet fell on Nicosia and Limassol on Monday night, turning to snow on the outskirts of the capital, while in all the districts there was heavy rainfall.
