Rain falls at last, but water situation ‘dramatic’

FOLLOWING almost two months of drought, rains at last began to fall in Cyprus yesterday, with the Met Service promising more to come in the days ahead.

But unless there is systematic rain over the coming months, the news is likely to come as scant relief to the island’s water supply, at its lowest levels in almost a decade.

EU aid for Turkish Cypriot farmers

THE EU has made available up to €500,000 in aid for the support of Turkish Cypriot sheep and goat farmers. Brussels will pay up to 65 per cent of the cost of selected projects to improve hygiene on sheep and goat farms in the Turkish Cypriot community.

Improvement works for Linopetra

AYIOS Athanasios Council has launched a project to beautify the area south of the Linopetra housing estate, close to the Ayios Stylianos church.

Greens vote to back Tassos

THE GREEN Party has voted to throw its weight behind President Tassos Papadopoulos in next February’s presidential elections.

Party members voted on Sunday to support Papadopoulos’ candidacy with 46 votes, or 79.3 per cent, from 58 elected representatives.
