Turks threaten to block Green Line shopping

THE Turkish Cypriot authorities could move to prevent the movement of all goods across the Green Line if the Cypriot government continues to block the implementation of a direct trade agreement between the north and the EU, a high level official told the Cyprus Mail yesterday.

Government orders probe in phone tap scandal

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday ordered a criminal investigation into claims that insiders at the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CyTA) were handing out data on private telephone conversations at a price.

The decision came as Finance Minister Michalis Sarris turned down CyTA chairman Stavros Kremmos’ offer to resign.

A MAN who stalked and harassed his ex-girlfriend and assaulting her new boyfriend was yesterday jailed for two years by a Nicosia District Court.

The defendant had been charged with six counts of assault, harassment and causing grievous bodily harm.

A BULGARIAN man has been arrested on suspicion of defrauding two compatriots by allegedly getting them work permits for a fee.

Two Bulgarian women had arrived in Cyprus in 2005 and met the 32-year-old suspect who promised to get them work permits for £800.

Neither woman knew each other.

Four accused of pimping Paraguayan women

FOUR MEN have been arrested and remanded in police custody on suspicion of pimping two Paraguayan women at a popular cabaret in central Nicosia.

A fifth man – who was arrested in connection with the same offences – was freed just before the hearing due to wrong identification after the police got declared his surname wrong in the arrest warrant.

Guardsman killed in crash

A 19-YEAR-OLD National Guardsman was yesterday killed on his way back to his unit after a night out.

At 4.40am, Nicholas Skoufaris from Orounta was driving on Makarios Avenue in the Nicosia suburb village of Kokkinotrimithia when, for as yet unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle and strayed into the opposite lane of traffic before crashing into a cement bridge.

Footballer on cocaine charge

POLICE in Limassol have arrested a second division footballer and his wife for possession of cocaine and cannabis.

The 30-year-old man and his wife were arrested on Tuesday night after Drug Squad (YKAN) officers raided his home in Limassol. According to investigators, officers found 117 grams of cocaine and 10 grams of cannabis in his house as well as a weighing scale.
