Guardsman killed in crash

A 19-YEAR-OLD National Guardsman was yesterday killed on his way back to his unit after a night out.

At 4.40am, Nicholas Skoufaris from Orounta was driving on Makarios Avenue in the Nicosia suburb village of Kokkinotrimithia when, for as yet unknown reasons, he lost control of his vehicle and strayed into the opposite lane of traffic before crashing into a cement bridge.

He was trapped in the car and had to be cut free of the wreckage by the Fire Services.

Shortly afterwards, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Nicosia General Hospital.

The police have appealed for anybody who may have witnessed the accident to contact the Citizen’s Line on 1460.
