Government hopes for airport deal this month

THE government hopes to conclude negotiations with the preferred bidder for the building and operation of the island’s new airport at Larnaca and the upgrading of the one at Paphos by the end of this month, head negotiator Lazaros Savvides said yesterday.

Number of asylum seekers drops

THE number of asylum seekers in Cyprus dropped substantially in the first quarter of the year, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to the UNHCR report, between October 1 and December 31, 2003, there were 3,201 asylum applications, compared to 1,048 in the fist three months of 2004.

Lucky escape for family as blaze guts bedroom

A FAMILY yesterday escaped unscathed after a fire ravaged through their home in the Limassol district village of Armenohori.

The blaze broke out at 4.20am and in a few seconds it spread to the bedroom, where Aliks Pierides and his wife were sleeping.

Pierides said he was woken up the thick smoke that filled the bedroom.

Mystery surrounds village wedding shooting

POLICE were yesterday still looking for leads in the attempted murder of a 30-year-old man shot during a wedding party in the Limassol district village of Pahna in the early hours of Sunday.

Nicos Tymvios was shot in the head with a shotgun at 3am while partying at a wedding reception in the municipal parking lot.

Public warned as Venus crosses the sun

ONE of the rarest of astronomical events will be visible from Cyprus today between 8.19am and 2.19pm when the planet Venus crosses the sun for the first time in 122 years in 1882.

However, the Fakas Institute has warned that people must be extremely careful not to look directly at the sun without special glasses.
