Lucky escape for family as blaze guts bedroom

A FAMILY yesterday escaped unscathed after a fire ravaged through their home in the Limassol district village of Armenohori.

The blaze broke out at 4.20am and in a few seconds it spread to the bedroom, where Aliks Pierides and his wife were sleeping.

Pierides said he was woken up the thick smoke that filled the bedroom.

He told his wife to take the children outside and then tried to put out the fire himself.
“I ran but it was spreading so fast I could not react,” Pieridis said.

“We were in immediate danger due to the gas cylinders in the garage and a pressurised air cylinder used in diving,” he added.

The fire was put out by the fire service but not before destroying the family’s car and the bedroom of the house, which is the property of the welfare services.

Damage was estimated at £15,000 and the family is hoping the welfare services will help.

“We’ll try and get over this too; I hope they’ll contribute in repairing it,” Pierides said.
According to the fire service, the blaze was caused by a small bulb used to keep chicks warm.
