SIMERINI: “Greek Cypriots investing in the north”. Acting DIKO leader Nicos Cleanthous said he had evidence that Greek Cypriots were selling their properties in the government controlled areas and investing the capital in the occupied north. According to Cleanthous, the businessmen were trying to gag politicians, hiding behind refugee demonstrations and taking advantage of peoples’ sensitivities. He added that when the time was right he would make the evidence public.
PHILELEFTHEROS: “Clinics start to close after failing to meet new regulations”. Twenty per cent of the island’s private clinics have started to close down of their own volition after failing to meet the new law’s requirements. So far, 26 clinics have closed down, after their owners felt they could not keep up with the changes, choosing to join with other larger clinics or to become old peoples’ homes. More clinics are expected to follow suit in coming days.
ALITHIA: “15-year-old girl injured in Larnaca”. A 15-year-old Larnaca girl was seriously injured on Thursday after she slipped and fell from a three-metre wall. The incident occurred at around 12.30pm, when the girl was trying to climb the wall, which is next to her apartment building. The girl was rushed to Larnaca Hospital where examinations revealed she had suffered a fractured spine and sternum. Her condition was described as serious, but out of danger.
MACHI: “Students pay the price as rents soar”. Apartment rents have soared over the past few years, affecting students and their meagre living allowances more than most. A number of students are already finding it hard to find a place to live, with fears that many will be left homeless with just one week to go before the start of the new academic year. Ironically, in full knowledge that time is closing in on the students to find a place to stay, landlords have increased their asking prices, causing upheaval to the student community.
POLITIS: “Granddad sets him straight”. A 19-year-old man was remanded in five-day custody after he attempted to rob his 78-year-old neighbour. Last Thursday, the teenager went to the elderly man’s home armed with a knife, and demanded money from the man’s housemaid. When the 78-year-old heard shouts he came to investigate and started to hit the boy with a broomstick. The younger man then stabbed the older man in the arm, wounding him superficially, and fled. The boy was found several days later and remanded on Thursday.
HARAVGHI: “Theocharous murder a professional hit”. Andreas Theocharous’ refusal to co-operate with police after two previous murder attempts on his life is making investigations into his murder extremely difficult. According to police sources, Theocharous had differences with a number of people in the underworld, whom he would not name. The same source said preliminary investigations revealed his murder was a professional hit by a foreigner and that Theocharous’ enemies had likely helped the assailant flee the country.
