Denktash to bow out of politics

VETERAN Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said he “absolutely” would not be running for ‘President’ during the April 2005 elections after over 40 years in politics, Anatolia News Agency reported yesterday.

In an interview with the Turkish news agency, Denktash said: “I will not run for the presidency and this is my definite decision. Change is beneficial.

Experts to arrive to review UNFICYP

EXPERTS from UN headquarters in New York are due on the island this weekend to carry out a review of UNFICYP, the peacekeeping force in Cyprus, spokesman Brian Kelly said yesterday.

The move was requested by Secretary-general Kofi Annan in June during the renewal of the force’s six-monthly mandate.

September meeting on CSE debacle

A JOINT session of the House Watchdog and Finance Committees to discuss a draft report on the 1999 stock market (CSE) debacle has been pushed back to September, Finance Committee chairman Aristos Chrysostomou said yesterday.

The meeting had been scheduled for August 30 but then it was postponed to the morning of September 14.

Papandreou doubts changes can be made to Annan plan

GREEK opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou yesterday cast doubt over the possibility of obtaining any changes to the Annan plan.

Speaking after a one-hour meeting with President Tassos Papadopoulos, Papandreou said discussions had centred on imminent developments in the Cyprus problem.

Who was Ayios Mamas?

Ayios Mamas was born in Paphlagonia, a region north of modern day Ankara and close to the Black Sea. He was the son of eminent Christians Theodotus and Rufina who lived during the reign of emperor Aurilianos, who carried out a systematic campaign against Christians (270-275 AD).

UNFICYP warning to hunters

UNFICYP yesterday warned hunters that hunting in the buffer zone was prohibited and dangerous.

“With the advent of the Small Game Hunting Season (August 22 until October 17) UNFICYP would like to remind hunters once more that hunting in the Buffer Zone is not allowed and can be dangerous,” the statement read.

Anger at Morphou church bombing

A BOMB explosion caused extensive damage to the church of Saint Mamas in Morphou in the early hours of yesterday, just days before Greek Cypriots were due to hold the first service there in 30 years.
