UNFICYP warning to hunters

UNFICYP yesterday warned hunters that hunting in the buffer zone was prohibited and dangerous.

“With the advent of the Small Game Hunting Season (August 22 until October 17) UNFICYP would like to remind hunters once more that hunting in the Buffer Zone is not allowed and can be dangerous,” the statement read.

The peacekeeping force also called on hunters to conduct themselves in a responsible manner, both for thief own safety and for the safety of others.

“In the past, there have been cases where hunters with loaded weapons have proved to be a hazard both for themselves and to UNFICYP patrols,” the statement read.

“Hunters wearing camouflage outfits and carrying guns can easily be mistaken for soldiers and therefore are at risk of being fired upon by either of the opposing forces.

“Firing guns in the area between the ceasefire lines increases tension because soldiers on duty cannot immediately determine where the shots have come from and may feel obliged to react.

“In view of this, UNFICYP appeals to all hunters to exercise caution and the highest standards of safety during the current hunting season.”
