Accident kills Russian couple

A WEEKEND road accident claimed the lives of three people in Paphos, puching the year’s road toll to 36. A Russian couple and a 47-year-old woman from Georgia were the latest victims of the car accident, which occurred at 2.45pm on Argakas Street in Polis Chrysochous.

Police are trying to determine how the 45-year-old Russian driver lost control of his car and collided with a concrete barrier, while trying to overtake another vehicle.

The driver and his wife, 38, as well as the Georgian woman were killed instantly. The Russian couple’s two children, 18 and 17, were seriously injured.

All victims were rushed to the Polis Chrysochous hospital by ambulance and later to the Paphos hospital. The two teenagers are not in critical condition.

From police investigations of the accident scene it was determined that only the driver was wearing his seatbelt.

In the period until May 25 last year, the road toll was 34 – two less than the same period this year.
