Government lashes out at north ‘back-flip’

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday accused Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat of trying to exploit the island’s EU accession without having to comply with EU norms.

Spokesman Chrysostomides was referring to the issue of Greek Cypriots having to show passports when crossing to the north of the island.

DISY lashes out at ‘secret’ tax plan

OPPOSITION DISY yesterday accused the government of preparing a raft of tax reforms that would be imposed immediately after the Euro elections.

Speaking at a news conference, deputy Maria Kyriacou and Euro election candidate Manthos Mavromatis, charged that the government was preparing measures on three levels that would be imposed right after the June 13 elections.

Limassol hospital workers strike

WORKERS AT the Limassol hospital sterilisation unit yesterday staged a one-hour walkout, demanding better working conditions in their department.

The workers said that for the past nine months they have been forced to hand-wash the surgery equipment due the malfunction of the special machines.

Accident kills Russian couple

A WEEKEND road accident claimed the lives of three people in Paphos, puching the year’s road toll to 36. A Russian couple and a 47-year-old woman from Georgia were the latest victims of the car accident, which occurred at 2.45pm on Argakas Street in Polis Chrysochous.
