Line up
Forget about Raindance, Line Dancing lessons are going strong in Limassol
TO help solve the conscience after that extra glass of wine and portion of souvla, I’m willing to try most things, especially if it involves a bit of exercise. Not too much though, my days of aerobic workouts and running for miles are well and truly over.
Line dancing, however, sounded a bit more like the ticket. Evie Hope holds line dancing classes for beginners on a Wednesday night. There is no charge for the dancing lessons although participants are asked to buy an extra raffle ticket for Evie’s constant fund raising.
The evening turned out to be great fun. The music is bouncy and cheery; it has you leaping inside, tapping your feet just itching to get going. You just can’t help but smile. At the beginning, while learning the routine a good sense of humour is a must as it’s easy to get a bit lost! No not a bit, totally. Trying to learning the footwork, I ended up going in all directions.
I thought I’d be better at the end of the line, discretely out the way. It wasn’t a good idea, I hadn’t heard the instructions to turn to the right and found myself holding up the entire class! It’s better to be somewhere in the middle so you only cause half the amount of confusion.
I tried again. There we were all bouncing along, swinging our hips and dancing to the right. I was determined to get it right and was concentrating so hard on the footwork and the rhythm that I wasn’t aware that we had turned to the left. By the time I caught up, the rest of the class was off in another direction. Of course, it helps to know your left from your right.
However, I wasn’t alone. We were all beginners and I noticed a few other dancers making a few wrong turns and moves. But I was definitely the least coordinated!
Line dancing is not only fun, it’s also a good form of exercise. It helps keep you supple without too much hard work although I was surprised by how many calories I must have burnt.
After the beginners’ session, Evie and about fifty ladies who regularly dance with her get up and show you how it’s supposed to be done. They were brilliant and made it look so effortless. Some of them wore special outfits, which were stunning. White blouses are decorated with a coloured, frilled collar with a maverick tie. Their skirt hems are frilled as well as the top of their boots. The boots and cowboy hats are bought in England.
So would I go again? Not sure, I don’t know what felt worse the following day, my legs, my hips or my poor old knees. Obviously I’m a bit more unfit than I thought.
