Cypriot doctor pioneers new dermatological treatment

A CYPRIOT doctor has developed an innovative laser method in the treatment of the dermatological condition onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection that causes fingernails or toenails to thicken, discolor and split. Until recently, the disease could only be treated using oral or topical medication that required lengthy consumption.

But Dr Constaninos Demetriou has developed a new laser treatment that involves no other medication at all.

“My new method in treating onychomycosis is convenient, painless, quick and efficient. No additional creams or other prescriptions need to be used, which makes this treatment a breakthrough in modern medicine. It promises a new era in dermatology.”

After having introduced the new technique at the Dermatological Congress of Cyprus and Greece in Ayia Napa last week, Dr Demetriou now treats patients at his clinic in Nicosia, describing it as successful.

“My patients will need to come maybe twice in one month to get laser treatment. Following this, the cure of the nail is guaranteed. It is simple and much easier than medication. With oral medication it is especially difficult to treat onychomycosis, as it does not reach the area under nails due to little blood supply.”

Dr Demetriou obtained the results of this method by research carried out in his own medical centre and has it patented to his name, which makes the practice exclusive at present.

According to Dr Demetriou, the method is exclusive, but a fungal disease is not: “From my experience I can say that about 25 per cent of the world population will experience a fungus at some point in their life.”
