HEALTH Minister Andreas Gavrielides yesterday announced the suspension of the head of the pharmaceutical services pending an investigation into allegations regarding suspicious procedures in the procurement of medicines.

Mr Christofi in his recent letter to your paper (‘Assimilation the best protection from minority rights’, April 15) has a few things confused.

To compare the situation of immigrants to the UK with that of Turkish Cypriots living in their own country is absurd.

President invited for official visit to Britain

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos has received an invitation from British Prime Minister Tony Blair to visit London, the government confirmed yesterday.
Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said the invitation was extended on April 8.

Christofias: we might send Annan ‘titles’

HOUSE President Demetris Christofias said yesterday the Greek Cypriot side had not ruled out sending in writing the ‘titles’ of changes they wanted to the Annan plan, but only after a firm commitment for resumption of talks by the UN.

A CYPRIOT doctor has developed an innovative laser method in the treatment of the dermatological condition onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection that causes fingernails or toenails to thicken, discolor and split. Until recently, the disease could only be treated using oral or topical medication that required lengthy consumption.

Donor match found for Turkish leukaemia patient

A BONE marrow match for a Turkish leukaemia patient has been found on the island, Health Minister Andreas Gavrielides confirmed yesterday.

A matching donor was being sought for 20-year-old Emine Ozan. The Karaiskakio Foundation in Nicosia has been working for some time with Turkish bone marrow donor registries.

Murder suspect claims he was tortured

A PAKISTANI man on trial for murder yesterday claimed he had been tortured by police the day before he took detectives on a tour of the scenes involved in the crime.
Zeeshan Asghar, 22, claimed he was beaten and otherwise abused for five hours by at least four officers, who had stripped him of all his clothes and tied his arms and legs.
