THE MEDITERRANEAN Institute of Gender Studies [MIGS] has been appointed the Cyprus National Contact Point for Euro Mediterranean Network for Youth Trafficking Prevention EMNYTP.
The Euro-Mediterranean Network for Youth Trafficking Prevention was initiated by Minorities of Europe, a pan European Youth Network, working on antidiscrimination and minority cohesion in a diverse Europe.
The Network is dedicated to promoting the collaboration and integration of anti-trafficking activities in the Euro-Mediterranean region to improve their long-term effectiveness and sustainability in the fight against human trafficking.
EMNYTP works as an instrument of coordination to encourage and strengthen co-operation among youth NGOs and groups from the countries of Europe and the Mediterranean in order to streamline and accelerate existing efforts to combat human trafficking in the region. The Network has the support of the Council of Europe, Euro Mediterranean Youth Platform, European Youth Forum, International Organisation for Migration, Global Youth Coalition on AIDS, UN Department on Trafficking and many other international organisations.
Trafficking violates fundamental human rights. It threatens the mental and physical health of the victims and impacts their future lives in destructive ways. Trafficked youth for forced labor suffer physical abuses, extreme exhaustion and psychological stress, leading to trauma, depression, and sometimes even suicide.
When trafficked for sexual exploitation, children and young people are subjected to sexual abuse, rape and other forms of violence, facing health risks such as sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV and AIDS.
In its capacity as national contact point for EMNYTP, the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies is committed to initiate and organise local and national events on youth trafficking prevention. MIGS will also be able to apply jointly with EMNYTP and its members for funding for joint events on anti-trafficking activities. This year’s priority is our Pan Euro Mediterranean program: “Human Rights Education for Youth Trafficking Prevention”.
