MMAD escorts shipment of euros to Nicosia

A SHIPMENT of euro coins arrived from Finland yesterday morning at Limassol port before being transported under heavy police security to Nicosia.

Twelve containers contained a total of 1 million euros in cents.

The containers were then immediately placed onto 12 lorries which left the port under heavy protection from police and Rapid Reaction Squad (MMAD) officers and arrived at MMAD headquarters in Nicosia at around 1pm.

Each lorry was escorted by MMAD officers on motorbikes whilst a MMAD officer siat next to the driver throughout the journey.

Officials from the central bank arrived at the headquarters to oversee the unloading of the containers.

A shipment of euro notes is expected to arrive in the near future.
