Japanese activists plant peace pole in the buffer zone

THREE JAPANESE volunteers have come all the way to Cyprus to present a two-metre aluminium peace pole to UNFICYP’s Chief of Mission Michael Moller today.

The three representatives of the World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS) will hand over Cyprus’ first peace pole at a special ceremony at Nicosia’s Ledra Palace to mark International Peace Day.

Delegates confident after start of FIFA Cyprus talks

AN OPENING round of talks aimed at ending more than 50 years of deadlock in Cypriot football has ended with both sides confident of reaching a solution.

The two-hour meeting at the headquarters of world soccer’s governing body FIFA yesterday involved delegates from the official Cyprus FA and the non-official Cyprus Turkish FA.

AKEL’s United Democratic Youth Organisation, EDON, said yesterday it was deeply concerned with the Education Ministry’s inaction regarding fee increases at private universities.

“The Education Ministry has so far refused to take a clear position on the issue and to intervene substantially to protect students,” the youth group said.

THE GOVERNMENT is palpably nervous about a case being considered by the European Court of Human Rights that could see the court approve a planned exchange of property with a Greek Cypriot refugee receiving Turkish Cypriot land in the south in compensation for his land in the occupied areas.
