Cyprus on film

THE Foreign Ministry yesterday launched a new website depicting various aspects of Cyprus on film, from the political problem to culture, in Greek, English and French.

The films and trailers are divided into categories that include people, economy, environment, history and traditions. Inside each of the subsections are several films related to a topic.
Initially, there will be 17 films in Greek, 30 in English, four in French and nine in various other languages.

In the political section, there is a film about the role of Cyprus in the Lebanese crisis in the summer of 2006 and a reply to the Turkish “allegations about the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots”.
The people section includes a portrait of contemporary Cypriot youth and a portrait of Cypriot sculptor Costas Argyrou.
Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis said the aim of the “digital television” was to offer information not only to visitors but also to Cypriots. It would also be a useful tool for embassies and diplomats, she said.

Later the web page will include television interviews with President Tassos Papadopoulos and other Ministers. Kozakou-Marcoullis also said the Ministry was studying the possibility of uploading films by Cypriot directors.

Asked why none of the films was in Turkish, Yiannakis Solomou, the director of the Press and Information Office, said it was because there was a shortage of Turkish translators.
The web page can be found at http://www.cyprusonfilm.com
It also contains links to government web pages.
