Stark warning with Cyprus running dry

MUD MIGHT be all that remains in the island’s reservoirs by early next year if the public do not do more to economise water use, warned the Minister of Agriculture yesterday.
Minister Fotis Fotiou once again urged the public to economise use of water on the island as Cyprus moves closer and closer to severe drought conditions in the coming months.

Hotels spared further power cuts

LARGE premises including hotels, businesses and ministries were yesterday spared from further regulated power cuts as electricity demand remained below availability, the Transmission System Operator (TSO) said.

EAC probes hotels that bypassed power cuts

A NUMBER of hotels managed to bypass the Electricity Authority’s (EAC) signal receiver, which was why they were unaffected by this week’s regulated power cuts.
“This is completely illegal and we are looking into it,” EAC spokesman Costas Gavrielides told the Cyprus Mail.
“We don’t know what we will do, but we will definitely do something,” he added.

Life sentence for savage double murder

A NICOSIA man was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of murdering his wife and her lover in August last year.
Two of the three Nicosia Criminal Court judges yesterday ruled that Christoforos Charalambous cold-bloodedly planned the murder of his wife and her lover after learning about their affair.

More missing remains identified

THE REMAINS of another 23 Greek Cypriots listed as missing since 1974 have been identified and are being returned to their families for a proper burial.

Elias Georgiades, the Greek Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) told the Cyprus News Agency that the process of exhumation and identification on both sides should be completed within three years.

Clubs are now searching for alternative irrigation methods after having been asked to do so by the Cyprus Water Board.

The films and trailers are divided into categories that include people, economy, environment, history and traditions. Inside each of the subsections are several films related to a topic.

Minister at loggerheads with EAC over power reserve

THE Commerce Minister and the Electricity Authority (EAC) are at loggerheads over government proposals to license a private power operator to supply the Transmission System Operator (TSO) with reserve electricity when the EAC falls short.
The Commerce Minister has blamed the dispute on the EAC’s desire to retain its monopoly on the island’s electricity supply.

Unemployment one of lowest in Europe

CYPRUS has registered one of the lowest rates of euro area unemployment in June 2007 at 3.9 per cent, according to figures published by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.
