Farmer killed after tractor overturns

A FARMER from Larnaca was fatally injured yesterday morning when the two-ton tractor he was driving overturned on an embankment as he was driving to church where he is a singer.

Tassos Constantinou, 51, was crushed to death at around 10am after leaving the coffee shop in the Limassol village of Melini to set off for the church where he helps with the chanting.

But as he left the outskirts of the village, the tractor slipped off the road and overturned into an embankment.

According to police who arrived at the scene, the victim might have survived had his head not hit a boulder as the truck overturned.

Constantinou, a divorced father of two, had recently moved to an apartment in Limassol but would often return to the village where he grew up so that he could plough his field and help with various church activities.

A source from Lefkara police station yesterday told the Cyprus Mail: “We are still investigating the exact reasons as to how the tractor went over the embankment.

Unfortunately, it appears that the man’s death was instant judging from the force with which he hit his head.”
