Cyprus does not expect Turkish compliance with EU

CYPRUS does not expect Turkey to comply with its EU obligations to open its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot traffic by mid-December, the government said yesterday.

Both Foreign Minster George Lillikas and government spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said it was very unlikely Ankara would changes its stance on Cyprus in the near future.

I am from Paphos and what I see on a daily basis is the appalling behavior of drivers. Apart from speeding, overtaking on a busy road and, of course, never indicating, the most serious and dangerous ‘habit’ is this: parents of young children and infants, almost always drive with their children sitting on the seat in front, next to the driver.

Cypriots love to diet and hate to walk

A NEW European health report has revealed that Cypriots are the second biggest dieters in Europe, with 32 per cent of those surveyed admitting to having been on a diet over the past 12 months. This compares to 29 per cent in the UK, and mere 14 per cent in Turkey, which was the lowest of the countries surveyed.

Farmer killed after tractor overturns

A FARMER from Larnaca was fatally injured yesterday morning when the two-ton tractor he was driving overturned on an embankment as he was driving to church where he is a singer.

Tassos Constantinou, 51, was crushed to death at around 10am after leaving the coffee shop in the Limassol village of Melini to set off for the church where he helps with the chanting.

Man ‘raped and beat wife three times a day’

A MAN OF 53 appeared in court yesterday charged with systematically abusing, beating and raping his Bulgarian wife.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also charged with raping his previous wife in another case.

He denies the accusations in both cases.

Ministry review gives deported Russian family hope

THIRTY-seven-year-old Vera Yudina, who was arrested and deported with her three children in September after living in Cyprus for 13 years, said yesterday she would not give up her campaign to be allowed to return to the place they call home.

“As long as I hope, I’ll keep on fighting, and I’ll keep on fighting till the end, whatever it costs,” Yudina said.
