Police arrest suspected drug dealer

POLICE have detained a man from the Nicosia village of Geri on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to sell.

Yesterday a Nicosia Court remanded the man in police custody for two days in light of the preliminary investigation against him.

Police were acting on a tip off in which they were informed that the suspect had recently bought 56 grams of cannabis.

Previously, Drug Squad (YKAN) Constable Stelios Stylianou said that the suspect was seen leaving his home on May 22 at around 8.15pm and walk towards a nearby park.

“When YKAN officers approached the man, he immediately ran off and we lost track of him. The suspect eventually gave himself up after his family members telephoned him and pleaded with him to come home.

“We picked him up at his home at around 9.15pm and we searched his house in his presence. We had also found 14grams of cannabis under a parked car close to the park where he had run away from.”

The man was later taken to YKAN offices where he told officers that the drugs were for his own personal use. He denied that he was a dealer and refused to name the person who had sold him the drugs.

Stylianou added that police are expected to take around 15 statements in the case including two drug users who are said to often visit the park to buy drugs.

The suspect was also seen that same morning of his arrest talking to two men who have been in trouble with the police in the past for drug-related offences.
