Parties squabble as Akamas burns

AS MORE fires threatened the island’s primary national park yesterday, opposing parties were quick to point the finger at each other.

Swift action by fire services and increased security measures in the area meant that only 10 square metres of the Akamas park were affected but the Forestry Department has warned any further blazes could be much worse.

Judges to decide on evidence in double murder trial

A NICOSIA Court is set to decide today whether there is a case against a man accused of killing his wife and her lover in August last year.

Christoforos Charalambous, 27, denies two charges of premeditated murder against his wife Anna Vasileva, 30 from Kyrgyzstan, and her 45-year-old lover Yiannos Demosthenous.

Police arrest suspected drug dealer

POLICE have detained a man from the Nicosia village of Geri on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to sell.

Yesterday a Nicosia Court remanded the man in police custody for two days in light of the preliminary investigation against him.

Police were acting on a tip off in which they were informed that the suspect had recently bought 56 grams of cannabis.

‘Don’t jump to conclusions over crime rates’

JUSTICE Minister Sophocles Sophocleous on Wednesday urged the public not to draw conclusions from the fact that two foreign nationals had been arrested in connection with the murder of a Cypriot stabbed to death on Tuesday, condemning any xenophobic interpretation of the tragedy.

‘Single parent families at high risk of poverty’

SINGE PARENT families are at high risk of finding themselves below the poverty line, the Cyprus Association for Single Parent Families and Friends said yesterday.

“We believe single parent families are at high risk because automatically they have a lower income than a two parent family,” Elena Soteriou, the association’s president said.

Murder suspects remanded in custody

A MAN and a woman have been remanded in police custody for the murder of a 53-year-old man from the Nicosia village of Meniko.

Constantin Solomon, 45, and his lover Mihaela Foltic, 28, both from Romania, are under investigation for conspiracy to commit murder and the premeditated murder of 53-year-old Giorgos Diomedous.
