Small quake shakes Limassol

A MINOR earthquake, of superficial depth, marking 3.5 on the Richter scale. was felt in the Limassol area yesterday.

The quake occurred at 12.53am. As confirmed by the Geological Survey Department, the earthquake’s epicentre was the city’s coastal area, 10km south of Yermasoyia bay. Its central depth was 11km.

The earthquake was felt in various areas in Limassol, as far from the centre as Kapsalos and Mesa Yeitonia. “I felt the earthquake while in bed,” one Mesa Yeitonia resident confirmed. “But I did not panic. It was only a mild quake,” she added.

Since then, however, no other seismic activity has been recorded and the Geological Survey Department considers the earthquake to be an isolated event. The Department’s Seismological Centre continues to monitor the phenomenon’s development.
