THE POLICE aim to end 2008 with 20 fewer road deaths than last year and they are planning to do so by applying zero tolerance to even the smallest of violations.

Squatter died of pneumonia

AN AUTOPSY on the body of a 48-year-old squatter found dead in an abandoned hotel in Limassol indicates that the man died of pneumonia.

The autopsy was performed by medical coroner Eleni Antoniou yesterday morning. The man, identified as Gania Gadieskov from Poland, was found lying in the corridor in the second floor of an abandoned seafront hotel in Limassol on Thursday evening.

BP closes bunkering operation in Cyprus

BP Marine is to close its bunkering operation in Cyprus due to a dearth of shipping business at the island’s ports, the company said.
Bunkering is the use of a ship to refuel other vessels that anchor offshore on their way to other destinations, a form of mobile fuel station.

The Red Cross needs your old Cyprus coins

THE CYPRUS Red Cross (CRC) is appealing to the public to donate their old Cyprus coins when the dual circulation period for the Cyprus pound and the euro ends on January 31.
From February 1, the old Cyprus coinage will no longer acceptable in retail outlets. The Cyprus Red Cross Society (CRCS), in conjunction with the Central Bank, has developed the perfect solution, they say.

Small quake shakes Limassol

A MINOR earthquake, of superficial depth, marking 3.5 on the Richter scale. was felt in the Limassol area yesterday.

The quake occurred at 12.53am. As confirmed by the Geological Survey Department, the earthquake’s epicentre was the city’s coastal area, 10km south of Yermasoyia bay. Its central depth was 11km.
