Clerides doing well after surgery

FORMER President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides is doing well after the emergency catheterisation he underwent on Monday.

Clerides was yesterday transported back to Evangelistria Clinic from the Heart Institute in Nicosia, to recuperate over the next few days.

According to his doctors, the former President’s health condition was stable and everything was running smoothly.

He had undergone emergency surgery on Monday night to put a stent in one of his heart arteries, which had blocked up.

Clerides returned to Evangelistria Clinic a little before noon yesterday, after being discharged from the Heart Institute.

On his departure Clerides said he was feeling well and it was nothing serious; he said he would spend a few days at Evangelistria, before heading back to his holiday home in Meneou.

“Because the President underwent a catheterisation another two times, we were aware of his condition,” said Clerides’ doctor, Iosif Kasios, yesterday morning. “The artery unfortunately started creating problems on Sunday morning, when the president started feeling unwell.”

Doctors initially tried to treat the problem with medication, due to Clerides fragile health condition and age, but when it didn’t work, it was deemed necessary for him to undergo surgery on Monday evening, when his health deteriorated.

“There are always risks when you have a patient who is 90 years old with all the problems that are faced by the president,” Kasios explained.
