Woman’s surrogacy ordeal highlights lack of legal protection

A 31-YEAR-OLD Filipino woman who was promised $5,000 to carry a child for a Cypriot couple has been sent back to her country with only $1,000.

The woman, whose visa documents showed she came to Cyprus to work as a housemaid, claimed she was forced into agreeing to bear the couple’s child and that she was threatened and made to leave the island fearing for her life.

A CHINESE man was arrested in Limassol yesterday after he tried to steal cash from a bank teller using a conjuring trick, police said.

The man was arrested after another Chinese man robbed €1,000 from a Limassol Co-op earlier in the day using the same trick. Police are looking for the second suspect who is thought to be staying at a local hotel, police said.

Civil servants to work Wednesday afternoon instead of Thursday

Beginning 1 September, civil servants will work on Wednesday afternoons instead of Thursdays, according to a memorandum prepared by the Communications Ministry.
