Nicosia nightclub burns down

A NICOSIA nightclub burnt down during the early hours of yesterday, police said.

The blaze broke out at Pyli Club near Famagusta Gate at around 2.50am.

According to senior police officer and district head of the Nicosia fire stations, Miltiades Miltiadous, the fire services received a call about the fire just over 10 minutes later.

Four fire-engines were immediately dispatched to the scene with a team of 11 fire-fighters but it was already too late to save the club which was completely destroyed.

Neighbouring apartments and homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure, Miltiadous said. Theatro Ena, which is close by, suffered some damage from the smoke, he added.

The cause of the fire is under instigation.

€200,000 stolen from Strovolos Co-op’

THIEVES BROKE into a Strovolos Co-op in Nicosia and made off with €200,000 in cash, police said.

The theft must have occurred sometime during the early hours of yesterday. The break-in was reported by a bank employee who showed up for work and spotted something amiss.

Police said the assailants had got into the bank through a window and then disengaged the alarm system. The thieves then stole around €200,000 in cash and disappeared.

Investigators gathered evidence from the scene which was sent for forensic analysis. By yesterday afternoon there were no known suspects.
