TIGER  Woods flourished in balmy morning conditions to claim one-stroke advantage halfway through the Australian Open on Friday, leading a tournament overnight for the first time this year.

The 35-year-old former world number one was delighted with his round of 67 to reach the clubhouse at nine under par, a shot clear of local veteran Peter O’Malley, whose six-under 66 was the lowest score of the day.

Australia’s world number seven Jason Day, who played with his boyhood hero Woods in front of packed galleries at the Lakes course for the first two rounds, was a further shot back in third on seven-under after a 68.

Papademos sworn in to tackle Greek crisis

New Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos took office today, heading a coalition cabinet filled with many of the same politicians who led the nation into crisis.
At a colourful swearing-in ceremony, bearded Orthodox priests, led by the Archbishop of Athens, blessed Papademos and a cabinet dominated by the two main parties which had bickered for four days before agreeing on the crisis coalition.
Apart from Papademos, who has no political experience, the main new face in the cabinet is a minister from the LAOS party — the first time the far right has entered a Greek government since the country returned to democracy in 1974 following years of military rule.

Greece dependent on Iranian oil

Greece is relying on Iran for most of its oil as traders pull the plug on supplies and banks refuse to provide financing for fear that Athens will default on its debt.

Traders said Greece has turned to Iran as the supplier of last resort despite rising pressure from Washington and Brussels to stifle trade as part of a campaign against Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The near paralysis of oil dealings with Greece, which has four refineries, shows how trade in Europe could stall due to a breakdown in trust caused by the euro zone debt crisis, which is threatening to spread to further countries.

‘New austerity measures within days’

NEW AUSTERITY measures will be announced within days, the government said yesterday only hours after Brussels threatened Cyprus with immediate sanctions if measures were not put in place to lower the deficit.

Cyprus, along with Malta, Belgium, Hungary and Poland have failed to reign in their deficits to the required level of under 3.0 per cent and will be receiving stern warning letters from Brussels in the coming days, said EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.

“I have already given an early warning to the ministers of these countries during the last Ecofin Council (held on Tuesday) and will be sending letters with our requests to these specific member states,”  Rehn said.
