‘Cyprus should claim rightfully owed moon rock’

THE CYPRUS government should make a formal request to the US Department of State for an investigation into the whereabouts of the missing moon rock, ex-NASA special agent, Joseph Gutheinz said yesterday.

The missing moon rock, which – as it transpired last week – was never given to Cyprus at all, is “property that rightfully belongs to Cyprus,” he added.

Hunter remanded for torching game warden’s car

A 30-YEAR-OLD Limassol man is in remand after being charged with torching the car of the game warden who caught him hunting illegally.

Marios Demetriou, 47, told police his car was targeted because of his job, which is catching illegal hunters.

Committee looks at state of Nicosia’s old town

THE NUMBER of Cypriots living inside Nicosia’s historic centre has dropped to less than half its total population, parliament heard yesterday.

“There have been demographic changes in the past 10 years with the settlement of immigrants in the walled city of Nicosia,” Mayor Eleni Mavrou told the House Interior Committee.

A year’s worth of rain already

WITH three months still to go, a year’s worth of rain has already fallen in Cyprus according to yesterday’s Meteorological Department report.

Up until September 20, the monthly rainfall exceeded five times the average, reaching a total of 23.8 mm. That is 529 per cent the monthly average rainfall of 4.5 mm.

Flash flood kills fish in Athalassa lake

OVER 500 fish in died in Nicosia’s Athalassa park lake over the weekend as a surge of rainwater carried large amount of sediment and other matter into the lake, suffocating the wildlife.

Fisheries officer and spokesman for the Fisheries and Marine Research Department, Ioannis Kyriakou said officers retrieved around 500kg of dead fish from the lake.

Commissioner determined to see through tyre recycling plan

A LONG-awaited tyre recycling programme is yet to gain finance, but Environment Commissioner Charalambous Theopemtou remains determined to see it implemented.

“The first thing I did as commissioner was to ensure that vehicle tyres are collected separately and the second was to implement a system for them to be recycled.”

Two men sought after weekend stabbings

TWO BANGLADESHI men are wanted for questioning in connection with the weekend stabbing of two of their compatriots, police said yesterday.
