Arrest for fake documents and euros

A MAN from Cameroonwas arrested and remanded in custody for eight days yesterday for alleged impersonation, and for possession counterfeiting euro notes.

According to police the man, Roger Jacqkes Nonyou, 35, was arrested at around 7pm on Wednesday at Larnaca Airport in his attempt to depart from Cyprus.

In the passport control, suspicion was raised as to the authenticity of his identification card and he was questioned.

During interrogation, the 35-year-old allegedly admitted that the identification document was not his and he presented a passport with his own personal details and he said he was “sorry”.

Following a search of his luggage, police found and confiscated the sum of €31,550, and photocopies of €100 notes, five bottles of ink and two bottles of white powder, a device that emits infrared light and a magnifying lens, all the necessary equipment to fabricate counterfeit money.

Nonyou said that another man from Cameroon gave him the identity card while he was in France. The police are now looking to see if the suspect crossed to the free areas through the occupied areas. There is no legitimate entry stamp from any airport or port of the Republic in his travel documents.

Larnaca Police Spokesman lieutenant Christos Andreou said that the case was serious because Nonyou had run-ins with the police in the past over similar offences. Andreou said, “Persons from a specific African country visited Cyprus and were trying to trick unsuspecting people with magic tricks. They were trying to persuade them that they could multiply bank notes by simply using a specific liquid”. Because of this police now believe that the Cameroonian is a member of a ring.

Larnaca CID is investigating the case.
