Arrest for fake documents and euros

A MAN from Cameroonwas arrested and remanded in custody for eight days yesterday for alleged impersonation, and for possession counterfeiting euro notes.

According to police the man, Roger Jacqkes Nonyou, 35, was arrested at around 7pm on Wednesday at Larnaca Airport in his attempt to depart from Cyprus.

Bank deposit guarantee bill ready

A GOVERNMENT bill guaranteeing bank deposits up to €100,000 is in its final stages and should come before parliament for voting sometime over the next couple of weeks.

It has been six months since the government announced the move, after a decision by EU Finance Ministers in Luxembourg last October that up to €50,000 in bank deposits would be guaranteed for a period of one year.

Eurocypria seeks Turkish ban damages

AILING charter airline Eurocypria is looking to secure up to €8 million in damages because of a ban prohibiting it from flying in Turkish airspace.

Under the proposed scheme, Eurocypria would receive the cash by the government in the form of subsidies. But before doing so, the government must ask permission from the European Union, which forbids direct state aid to airlines.

Missing boy runs away when he’s told off

THE 15-YEAR-OLD Greek Pontian boy who was reported missing by his mother on Wednesday goes AWOL at least once a month, police said yesterday.

Costas Hafisides is a familiar face to Nicosia CID officers as he frequently leaves home for several days at time. The boy eventually turns up of his own volition, police said.

CyBC suspends controversial but most popular talk show

THE CYPRUS Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) has decided to temporarily pull the plug on a popular political show, ostensibly because of a programming reshuffle.

It’s understood the show, “To Sizitame,” which is hosted by Erini Charalambidou, has ruffled more than a few feathers within the state-run broadcaster for deviating from ‘mainstream’ views on the Cyprus problem.
