EU aid for Turkish Cypriots

THE EUROPEAN Commission has signed two contracts for a total of €4.2 million to assist the Turkish Cypriot community to improve the management of solid waste and water and wastewater services so as to reach EU environmental standards.

The consortium led by the Danish company Grontmij/CarlBro A/S will provide experienced professionals to work alongside Turkish Cypriot counterparts in the fields of water, wastewater and solid waste management.

The selected consultants will provide extensive training and support to Turkish Cypriots to introduce the changes needed to achieve state-of-the-art practices in the management of these sectors. Pilot projects in the field of medical and organic waste management will be implemented. There will be a communication strategy with specific focus on solid waste management.

This project is needed to make the necessary technical skills available in the Turkish Cypriot community to ensure long-term sustainability of EU funded works contracts in the field of solid waste and water/wastewater.

A launch is set to be held by European Commission officials, the company Grontmij | Carl Bro A/S and representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community in Nicosia today.

The project is funded under the €259 million EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, managed by the European Commission.
