Bomb fails to detonate outside Limassol pub

A BOMB that failed to detonate was placed outside a Limassol pub yesterday.

Police said it was pure luck that there were no victims or damages, as the fuse to the device went out at the last minute.

The bomb was found in the early hours of the morning after police received a tip-off that there were suspicious goings-on outside the pub in Amathus.

Officers found the bomb in the main entrance and the scene was cordoned off until bomb squad technicians examined the explosive.

“From investigations by the Limassol Police Headquarters’ bomb technician it emerged that it was a handmade bomb, consisting of high-powered explosives,” said Limassol police spokesman Andreas Angelides.

The TNT, one-litre bomb was meant to go off after the spark was lit, but under unknown circumstances it went out just in the nick of time.

Due to the quantity and the fact that the explosives were so powerful the damage could have been huge, putting anyone passing by at severe risk, police said.

“Due to the seriousness of the case we can’t give any more details; all possibilities will be investigated,” said Angelides.

The most possible scenario, according to police sources, is financial differences involving the owner.
