Crowds gather for last farewell to Papadopoulos

THOUSANDS of mourners attended a funeral service yesterday for former President Tassos Papadopoulos, laid to rest amid full state honours.

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni were among politicians, friends and admirers who paid their last respects to Papadopoulos.

Immigration pumps up Cyprus population growth

BY THE end of this year, the population of Cyprus is expected to be close to 802,000, following a 15 per cent increase in 2008, nearly 12 per cent of which was due to migration, and only 3.8 per cent to natural cycles.

Cyprus had a crude birth rate of 10.4 per cent in 2008 and a death rate of 6.6 per cent, which means the population grew 3.8 per cent.

Bomb fails to detonate outside Limassol pub

A BOMB that failed to detonate was placed outside a Limassol pub yesterday.

Police said it was pure luck that there were no victims or damages, as the fuse to the device went out at the last minute.

The bomb was found in the early hours of the morning after police received a tip-off that there were suspicious goings-on outside the pub in Amathus.

Search for shipwrecked crew off Limassol

THE SEARCH continues to find the three missing crew members from the Farouk M, the Moldavian-flagged ship that sunk off the coast of Limassol on Sunday morning. A police helicopter, as well as navy and Port Police vessels, have joined the rescue mission, which successfully tracked down a rescue raft carrying seven shipwreck survivors.

Man stabbed in Paphos club toilet

A 47-YEAR-old accountant from Anarita village in Paphos was stabbed in a toilet in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The attack took place at around 4am in the rest room of Fengaria Bouzouki club in Kato Paphos.

The victim was rushed to Paphos general hospital with a stab wound to his chest, and was able to give a decription of this attacker to police.

AT LEAST 30 staff at the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) will lose their jobs as part of a series of dramatic cuts in the networks operation.

The axe will fall exclusively on employees from the radio division and rumour is rife that the popular Radio 2 network will also be shut down as part of the streamlining.
