Act now to stop traffic choke

Cypriots have more cars than anyone in Europe

EXPERTS yesterday called for an urgent transport plan for a unified Cyprus, as spiralling car ownership threatens to choke the island.

By the end of this year, there will be more than one card for every man woman and child on the Greek Cypriot side.

The corridors of power

The speech Lehman Brothers CEO Richard Fuld should have given at House of
Representative’s Oversight Committee meeting held on Capitol Hill, September 2008

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious by that son of a bitch, Greed, and all the cash that lour’d upon world banks in the deep bosom of banker’s pockets buried.

In support of daytime running lights in cars

Sir,

With regard to the letter printed in Cyprus Mail on October 2 from GC Evans entitled ‘Daytime lights: another ludicrous idea from the EU’.

This letter seems to be more of a “let’s bash the EU” effort rather than any serious attempt to justify the non use of Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

Dams need monitoring if we are to have any fish left

Letter to the Director of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research

Sir,

I have fished the reservoirs of Cyprus for the last two years. I have purchased the necessary licence in order to do so and have always obeyed the conditions applicable to recreational fishing.

Israel’s actions speaks for itself

Sir,

It is depressingly encouraging when one elicits a response such as the one from Mr Whitney (‘Hamas propaganda needs correcting’, Sunday Mail, September 27). Depressing owing to its tone, encouraging because one has clearly made a point.

Look no further than the Kypria Festival for your culture fix

Sir,

I have often heard Cypriots and many foreigners complain about Cyprus’ lack of cultural options and how the island lacks entirely any breath of culture.

OK, this is no London’s West End nor Broadway but I think the Ministry of Culture has been doing a phenomenal job with the yearly Kypria Festival – particularly this year!

The importance of language

Sir,

In response to Kosta Pavlowitch’s thoughtful article entitled ‘The importance of language in a globalised world’, (Sunday Mail, October 5).

The book Rodney V. Bird should read

Sir,

It is obvious that your correspondent, Mr Rodney V. Bird has not read my book The Origins and Evolution of Church – State Relations In Cyprus for the following reasons:

(a) My book was based on my thesis for the degree of Master of Theology which was submitted to the Divinity Department of the University of Glasgow,

Patriotism is indeed the last refuge of a scoundrel

Sir,

I agree with Gavin Jones’ letter in which he criticises some Cypriot politicians as being scoundrels for hiding behind flags in the Cyprus problem because “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel”.

He says that we should “wise up politically and endeavour to take a leaf out of Turkish politicians’ way of conducting foreign policy”.
