TWO LARNACA police officers could face an anxious wait of up to six weeks to find out if they have been infected with HIV after being attacked and bitten by a suspect who was HIV positive.

The two men received urgent medical attention after a British man infected with HIV bit one officer and scratched the other when he tried to escape from police custody.

High aflatoxins found in yogurt

ELEVATED levels of aflatoxins were found in homemade sheep yogurt, the Health Services said yesterday.

The Loukia Kayia Ltd yogurt in a 450g plastic container with a production date May 31 and use by date of June 30 was found during the Health Services ongoing aflatoxin screening process.

Tea with Talat and dinner with Christofias as two sides fail to meet

TURKISH CYPRIOT leader Mehmet Ali Talat did not attend a dinner last night with President Demetris Christofias and Lynn Pascoe but he invited the UN Undersecretary General to tea beforehand.

Pascoe arrived on the island late on Monday and met both leaders separately yesterday. It was hoped the visit would result in an agreed date for the leaders to meet.

Former presidential hopeful Paschalides dies

WELL-KNOWN Cypriot businessman Paschalis Paschalides died at his home in Athens yesterday at the age of 79.

Paschalides was born in 1929 in the village of Prastio. He studied Economics and Political Science in London.

He was a close associate of President Makarios, and served as Minister of Commerce and Industry in the first Council of Ministers.

Akhtar brothers could face charges in Greece too

THE AKHTAR brothers will also face charges from the Greek authorities to add to the charges expected to be brought against them by the Cypriot police, it emerged yesterday.

The Greek authorities are believed to be charging the two brothers who had been on the run since August 3 last year for using false documents to enter the country.
