Central Bank sounds alarm on inflation

CENTRAL Bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides warned again yesterday that fiscal restraint was needed as long as the economy continued to face inflationary pressures.

Moller to leave Cyprus post at end of March

MICHAEL Moller, the UN Secretary-general’s Special Representative in Cyprus will be leaving his post at the end of the month, UNFICYP confirmed yesterday.

UNFICYP spokesman Jose Luis Diaz, responding to reports over the past few days that Moller would be replaced, said the Danish diplomat would be leaving at the end of the month.

Wheel problem forces CY flight to return to base

A CYPRUS Airways aircraft heading to Thessaloniki yesterday had to return to Larnaca Airport due to a mechanical fault.

Thirty-five minutes after taking off from Larnaca, the plane’s captain made the decision to turn back after realising one of the plane’s back wheels had not returned to its correct position.

He managed to land the plane safely and nobody was hurt.

Swedish invitation for new President

SWEDEN has decided to give Cyprus another chance following former President Tassos Papadopoulos’ diplomatic gaffe last year that led to strained relations between Nicosia and Stockholm.

Yesterday Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt extended an invitation to new President Demetris Christofias to visit Sweden.

More and more pupils referred to psychologists

THE NUMBER of school children referred to state psychologists last year rose by 17 per cent compared to the year before, according to a recent Education Ministry report.
The biggest problems faced by school children were delinquency and learning difficulties, both of which are interconnected, said Michalis Ioannou, head of the Educational Psychology Service (EPS) yesterday.

Women mugged by carnival thieves

TWO WOMEN in Limassol were mugged by men wearing carnival masks outside their residence, police said yesterday.

The incident occurred at midnight on Monday. The victims who are third-country nationals residing in Limassol, were standing outside the building where they live, when two unknown men attacked them, hit them, grabbed one of the women’s bag and ran away.
