Cypriot firemen honoured by Greek government

THE CYPRIOT firemen, who joined forces with Greek firefighters to combat the huge blazes in Greece, have been honoured in a special ceremony by the Greek government, before their return to Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, on Sunday the firemen laid a wreath at a monument for those killed on duty.

A MAN is in a critical condition after jumping off the third floor of a hotel room during a police raid.

The unidentified man, who is simply known to investigators as ‘Bobo’, was yesterday said to be in a critical condition at Nicosia General Hospital after plunging some 14 metres from the third floor of the hotel room.

Man in hospital after family squabble

AN IRANIAN man was in hospital yesterday after being repeatedly stabbed for telling a relative of his to end her relationship with her boyfriend.

The 25-year-old disgruntled boyfriend, who is also Iranian, went to visit the 35-year-old to seek an explanation, a furious fight ensued and then the knife came out.

The incident took place on Sunday evening in Limassol.

National Council stands behind July 8 accord

THE NATIONAL Council was yesterday unanimous in its support of pushing the July 8 agreement at tomorrow’s talks between President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

The National Council convened 48 hours ahead of the scheduled meeting between Papadopoulos and Talat at the residence of UN special envoy Michael Moller at 4pm.

Fire restoration to begin soon

REFORESTATION of forest and farmland destroyed in a huge fire in the Troodos mountain range in June will begin by the middle of October, the Agriculture Minister announced yesterday.

Fotis Fotiou added that the cost for private landowners will be completely covered by the government, under the Agricultural Plan for 2007-2013.
