State ponders what to do about commission applicants

THE GOVERNMENT said yesterday it expected refugees to take on board the state’s position and not submit applications to the Turkish Cypriot property commission.
Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said the issue was being handled by Attorney-general Petros Clerides who would determine whether Greek Cypriot applications to the compensation committee were illegal.

EAC calls strike over gas dispute

EMPLOYEES at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) have retaliated at a government decision to invite tenders for a floating Liquefied Natural Gas terminal, announcing a 24-hour stoppage for next Wednesday.

Armed robbery

POLICE in Nicosia are investigating a case of armed robbery against two men accused of attacking and robbing a betting shop owner
.
According to police in Lakatamia, the 50-year-old betting shop owner identified two men, aged 45 and 63 from Limassol, who on Thursday had attacked him before taking around £1,000 from his till. They then reportedly got into a car and drove off.

Malta President to visit

THE PRESIDENT of Malta Edward Fenech Adami is due in Cyprus tomorrow on a three-day visit for official talks with President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Following the official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the two Presidents will hold a private meeting and official talks with the participation of their delegations, and will make statements to the press.

NBG gets extension on mediation efforts

THE NATIONAL Bank of Greece yesterday got an extension until Tuesday to reply to a mediation effort in its ongoing feud with bankers union ETYK, but the omens for agreement were not good.

The dispute concerns the seconding of two employees from the bank’s Greece headquarters to its Cyprus operations.

Hoax email brings false hope of vouchers

CYPRUS has been hit by a hoax email campaign, with a bogus message promising up to £500 in Marks and Spencer vouchers to anybody who forwards the e-mail to 20 friends.
The hoax says that M&S were working in conjunction with Persimmon Homes on a word of mouth advertising campaign to promote M&S’s products and services.

Dial-up the euro

THE FINANCE Ministry will launch a free-phone number for the euro on Monday, within the framework of the campaign for the adoption of the single currency in Cyprus from January 1, next year. The number is 8000 2008.
According to a Ministry statement the number will provide direct and reliable information to citizens about the adoption of the single currency.

Scottish woman drowns in pool

A SCOTTISH woman on holiday in Cyprus died on Thursday after losing consciousness while swimming in her parent’s pool.

According to police, Lynn MacDonald, 23, was swimming in the pool at her parent’s villa, in the Kokkines area of Ayia Napa, when she suddenly felt ill and then lost unconscious.
