EU rights commissioner promises to plead Iraqis’ cause

EU Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammerberg said yesterday that he would be contacting the Cypriot government over the status of a group of Iraqi refugees that have been camped outside the UN Protected Area in Nicosia for the last 73 days.

Hammerberg met the refugees yesterday, calling the situation they found themselves in “very sad”.

Second murder suspect caught by UNFICYP

POLICE yesterday had in custody the alleged accomplice in the murder of a 20-year-old Russian woman in Nicosia last month.
According to media reports, the suspect was apprehended by UNFICYP officers who then handed him over to Cypriot police.

Health Ministry to lower salaries of contract neurologists

THE HEALTH Ministry has decided to lower the salaries of two child neurologists, who are set to be signed on contracts by the government, following an outcry from state doctors.

The Health Ministry had initially planned to bring in doctors from abroad on wages amounting to around £55,000, a figure which dwarfed those of local public sector doctors.

Man of 51 held for sex with 15-year-old

A 51-YEAR-old man is under investigation for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, Limassol police said.
The man, who is from Paralimni, has allegedly confessed to having had sex with the teenager over the past four months, but claims the intercourse was consensual.
