Stepping up the pressure for new talks

THE UN is cranking up the pressure for a quick resumption of Cyprus talks now that the parliamentary elections are over.

Hot on the heels of the publication of a statement by UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan on Tuesday that it was time the two sides resumed contact, his Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari said he would be visiting Cyprus soon.

Wanted by police

POLICE are looking for Panayiotis Charalambos Kitsio, 33, alias ‘Paparitsas’ from Paphos, for whom there are several arrest warrants outstanding connected with conspiracy to commit a crime, counterfeiting and taking money under false pretences. All of the alleged crimes were committed in Limassol throughout 2005 and also in January 2006, police said.

Public servant admits attacking Anorthosis fan

A PUBLIC servant man accused of beating unconscious an Anorthosis fan, right in front of his eight-year-old son, was yesterday remanded in custody for five days by a Larnaca court.

Yiannis Pipis, 27, has confessed to being one of the men who attacked 56-year-old Angelos Minas on April 29 outside Anorthosis’ home ground, the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium.

Man jailed for rape of Latvian

A MAN from Frenaros was jailed for eight years yesterday for the kidnap and rape of a Latvian woman last August.

Michalis Philippou, 30, was sentenced by the Larnaca district court for the attack on the 40-year old woman.

Government denies reshuffle rifts

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday played down media speculation that the cabinet reshuffle was being delayed because party leaders were quarrelling over who would get what jobs.

Opposition DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades has claimed the only reason the reshuffle has still not been announced is because some governing parties are squabbling over the positions where nepotism is most rife.

Petrol stations deny diluting fuel

THE ASSOCIATION of petrol station owners yesterday vehemently denied suggestions that water was being added to petrol, after a mechanic claimed he had seen over 30 cars damaged by adulterated fuel.
