Car bomb arrest

A 24-YEAR-OLD man was arrested for questioning in connection with a bomb explosion in Limassol during the early hours of yesterday morning, said police.

Police spokesman Demetris Demetriou confirmed the blast occurred at around 2am. He said a bomb had been placed in 42-year-old Maria Nearchou’s car, while it had been parked in her driveway on Alexander Fleming Street, in Ayios Ioannis. The car owner was abroad at the time of the blast, said police.

Police officers and bomb squad experts were dispatched to the scene immediately. Preliminary investigations revealed the explosion had been caused by a home made device made from high density explosives which had been placed in the car trunk and on its roof.

The 24-year-old Limassol man was arrested after, according to reports, witnesses placed him at the scene.
