Hotel shake-up should take disabled into account

Referring to your editorial comments on the proposed CTO regrading of the hotels’ star system (Tourism plan needs to be thought through, February 15), I see that gardens, reception areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, entertainment, sports and security are to be assessed and stars awarded accordingly. Not a word about disabled access or disabled facilities though.

£1 for Cyprus Airways

I will offer £1 for Cyprus Airways, and make a restart with the company.

However all personnel will be fired and no benefits will be paid. Anybody can apply for their old job witin one day,or it will be advertised internationally.

Suspended sentence for painter who stole cheque

A PAINTER AND decorator from Limassol was yesterday handed a nine-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to charges of theft and fraud.

The 38-year-old man had pleaded guilty to stealing an £8,000 cheque from a car in Nicosia and then changing the name on the cheque before attempting to deposit the sum into his parent’s account at a bank.

Could this really be a new start?

A U.N. spokesman yesterday stopped short of saying a new Cyprus initiative might be in the works as a result of President Tassos Paapadopoulos’ meeting with Secretary-general Kofi Annan on February 28 in Paris.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Annan’s spokesman Stephan Dujarric said both men would review the situation in Cyprus and discuss ways of moving forward.

Basketball All-Star Day 2006 heading for Cyprus

FOR THE second time, Cyprus will this year host the Eurocup All-Star Day, organised by FIBA Europe. The day is one of the biggest basketball events in the world.

According to CNA, the event promises a rich programme, a three-pointers’ competition and an interesting basketball game between 12 of the best European players and 12 of the rest of the worlds’ best players.

Desperate fisherman takes to the sea

A DESPERATE Paphos fisherman frustrated at a new fishing license requirement was lucky to have escaped injury when he steamed into open waters at 10pm on Wednesday night in rough sea conditions. Though Demetris Hadjichristofias was not hurt, his vessel was damaged after strong winds and rough seas battered his vessel upon the shore of Geroskipou.
