There was some irony and sarcasm from Mr Kurt Dejgaard of Montreal in his letter last week (‘Greek Cypriots Know Best’). In it he berates George Stephanides for his well meaning letter of May 12 because Mr Stephanides dares to suggest that Greek Cypriots may have some filial concern for Turkish Cypriots.

What a load of rubbish

CYPRIOTS are the second biggest producers of rubbish per person in he EU after Ireland, throwing away 724kg of trash every year, up 124 kg per person in the space of eight years.

According to statistics released yesterday, only the Irish produce more rubbish than the Cypriots, accounting for 732kg per person compared to the EU average of 534kg.

Minister calls on smokers to quit

HEALTH Minister Andreas Gavrielides sent out a stern message yesterday as part of International No Smoking Day, calling on Cypriots to kick in the habit.

Speaking at a news conference, called in conjunction with the Cyprus Electricity Authorities (EAC), Health Minister Andreas Gavrielides spoke of the need for greater awareness about the dangers of smoking.

Neither cheap nor quality: Cyprus tourism in limbo

CYPRUS tourism has fallen into the gap between cheap and quality destinations and needs to speed up reforms in the sector or continue to lose out, hoteliers said yesterday.

“There are three categories of destination: cheap, quality and those in between,” Haris Loizides, chairman of the Hoteliers Association PASYXE, said yesterday.
