Pyrgos and Dhenia mine clearing

THE U.N. Mine Action Cell will begin mine clearance operations in the area of Kato Pyrgos and Dhenia on Monday, an announcement said yesterday.

The announcement contained directions regarding safety measures to protect the public saying that a safety cordon would be placed around the minefields at a distance of 100m during normal working hours, from 7am to 4.30pm.

During demolition operations, the safety area would be extended to 500m around the minefield, it said, adding that the public should be prepared to hear number of loud explosions.

“If requested by a member of the Police, National Guard or other authority to move from the area, please comply as it is for your own safety and the safety of others.”

The public should also expect some road closures during mine clearance operations but detour directions will be posted.

“De-mining may be a novel attraction for some, however for public safety reasons stand clear of areas marked,” the announcement said.
