Paphos crime is spiralling out of control

A SURVEY by the Paphos Chamber of Commerce has shown a fivefold increase in crime in Paphos since 2000, warning that if left unchecked this trend could have a serious impact on tourist arrivals.

Road to the euro will not be a bed of roses

CYPRUS will remain at least two years in the Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERMII) before adopting the euro, either in late 2007 or early 2008, Finance Minister Makis Keravnos said yesterday.

Keravnos was speaking after a meeting of the National Advisory Committee for the Adoption of the Euro, which met for the first time yesterday.

Pyrgos and Dhenia mine clearing

THE U.N. Mine Action Cell will begin mine clearance operations in the area of Kato Pyrgos and Dhenia on Monday, an announcement said yesterday.

The announcement contained directions regarding safety measures to protect the public saying that a safety cordon would be placed around the minefields at a distance of 100m during normal working hours, from 7am to 4.30pm.

Talat expects UN envoy soon

TURKISH Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat said yesterday he believed the UN would be sending an envoy to the island soon to assess the climate for the resumption of Cyprus talks.

Talat was speaking yesterday at a joint news conference in the north with US State Department Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Laura Kennedy.

UN earmarks $44 million for Cyprus

THE U.N. General Assembly has appropriated around $44 million gross for the maintenance of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for the period July 2003 to the end of June 2004.

Petros Clerides named to replace Nikitas

ASSISTANT Attorney-general Petros Clerides was yesterday appointed Attorney-general, replacing Solon Nikitas who resigned last week after the Supreme Court overturned the conviction of former health minister Dina Akkelidou.

In an official statement, President Tassos Papadopoulos announced Clerides’ appointment, adding that no assistant would be appointed at this point.

Minister denies EU warnings on airports

COMMUNICATIONS and Works Minister Haris Thrasou has played down suggestions that EU airport inspectors are firing warnings at the Civil Aviation Authorities to bring security and safety regulations at the airports on the island up to scratch or face the consequences.
