Pensioner killed in road crash in Paphos (Updated)

AN 81-year-old retired doctor died in a road traffic accident in Paphos on Thursday evening.

According to the head Paphos traffic police, Zenon Psathities, the conditions surrounding the fatal accident which occurred at 7.15pm on the main road between Stroumbi and Kathikas, are being examined.

According to police, a saloon car which was being driven by Theodosis Patsalides, 81, from Kathikas, under circumstances being investigated, collided head-on with oncoming traffic; a saloon car being driven by a 62-year-old with his wife, 58, as a front seat passenger.

The occupants of both vehicles were rushed to hospital by ambulance where the duty doctor confirmed the death of the 81-year-old.

Both the driver and passenger of the other vehicle received slight injuries and were kept in for treatment overnight.

Meanwhile a post mortem into the exact cause of death is expected to be carried out on Friday. There is a possibility that the pensioner suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his car.

The head of traffic police said that the 62-year-old driver showed zero alcohol levels in his blood.

The retired doctor had worked for many years in Limassol.
